Cure the NHS press release 15th June embargoed until 16th June 2014

On the 16th June at 9am Cure the NHS will stand alongside NHS frontline staff from Patient First to stage a silent protest outside the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) annual conference.

We will be protesting at the lack of support that the RCN offers its members when they try to raise concerns about patient care/safety.

After the Mid Staffs Public Inquiry the RCN made a promise to change and to start supporting staff when they tried to raise concerns. We hear very little has changed for nurses when they need support from their union.

Cure the NHS is an independent group for patients but we are still contacted by NHS staff who contact us in tears on a regular basis as their union the RCN has not helped them. They tell us their lives are ruined just for trying to help patients and it is not uncommon for them to be bullied from their jobs. As CTNHS is a patient group we are ill equipped to help them and all we can do is offer support and signpost them to other groups who have more experience to help them. But we are finding there are more and more making contact and asking for help after their union has not supported them, after they have bravely tried to raise concerns.

Julie Bailey say’s “Nurses and Dr’s are our eyes and ears they should feel safe to raise concerns within their organisations. CTNHS is supporting Patient First, in calling for a Public Inquiry under the Inquiries Act 2005 into the “plight of a whistleblower” within the NHS. Jeremy Hunt MP has stood up for patients and their safety, we are now calling on this Government to investigate why legislation isn’t protecting those who try to speak out in the NHS for patient safety”.

It is now time for patients to stand side by side showing our support for these brave nurses who should be allowed to speak out safely.

Show your support too and join us on the 16th June at 9am
